Infected insect bite

The NHS Pharmacy First scheme is here to help you understand and get treatment for infected insect bites.

Insect bites are something most people have experienced. Whilst some itching and pain is fairly common, occasionally a bite can lead to an infection.

How do I tell if an insect bite is infected?

An insect bite will often leave an itchy red lump on your skin. You may also have a mild allergic reaction, causing the area around the bite to become swollen, red and painful. This should pass within a few days. If the redness and pain doesn’t pass, the bite may have become infected.

Treatments

If our pharmacist confirms you have an infected insect bite, they will be able to supply you with treatment during your appointment. You will not need to visit your GP for further diagnosis or a prescription.
